I really appreciate your great advice. These positive tools are a stepping stone to success. I am a writer: had a few short stories and poems published; and planning to published my first book. I am taking a massive leap of faith, to become a movie screen writer. I have 3 amazing stories in my head - and have to share it with the world. Our gifts and talents cannot go wasted. God bless, regards from Cape Town, South Africa
Had a former friend give feedback on scripts I've written in the past, and I didn't see it until later but the way he was giving the feedback was more about satisfying his ego than actually helping me. Which I'll admit shook my confidence in myself as a filmmaker, but I'm writing my biggest film project to date and he's not gonna get eyes on it at all.
Just want to say, as someone who's been around since your first videos, its awesome to see the incredible way you guys have built this channel that has probably helped more people than you will ever know find their footing in the industry and the art of film!
Best channel ever to born in 2009 = Film riot. Thank you Ryan
So happy that you're putting a lot of effort into screenwriting 🙌🙌 Honestly, it's the backbone to making a good movie; great directing, acting, and cinematography doesn't matter if the script isn't good.
Best advice I ever received about scriptwriting is "Don't Direct On Paper." EXT. GARY'S HOUSE - DAY With a satisfying SPLOOSH, Gary dumps the rest of the bucket of sudsy water on his Red 1968 Mustang and WHISTLES "ZIPPTY DO DAH" as he cleans his car, oblivious to the happy little blue bird perched on a wire high above the windscreen You can visualize this scene in many different ways. You probably already have a Wide Shot in mind, maybe a Dolly Zoom Out to reveal the bird. Let the Directors figure out what to do. Your job, as a writer, is to give the reader brain food. How many jokes can you find in my scene?
The second part of the video is even more important. Its when we follow the ideas and how they want to be, not considering the audience, it becomes a very true and honest story and how it should be in that world
This video is absolutely perfect! I am a film maker myself, and my 15 year old brother with autism has asked me to teach him so that he can learn to make his own films. He wants to learn to write stories and scripts, so we’ve been working on it for a few weeks now and this is going to help us so much!
Thank you for existing!
Hey brother, thank you so much for making this! I'm putting myself through everything I can to become the Director, Writer, Editor, and Cinematographer that I wanna be. I know the better I do, the less I'll be able to focus on each of these areas, but I want to be the best I can be in these areas to make the stories I wanna make. Thank you for years of being an incredible, life changing resource <3
You are doing, and have been doing, the filmmaking community a good service. Keep up the great work, Ryan and team.
I've been doig this for about three years now, but it's always great to keep going over the basics.
Can’t wait for the ‘ this could be an entire episode by itself” episodes
This is gold! I'd like to advice writers to not be too specific about things like editing and music though. It might make others in the production team feel inhibited and trapped inside someone else's vision. These choices are probably going to be made by somebody else than the writer anyway.
Brightens my day when you guys upload!
Super helpful. Just getting started. Thank you!
Great episode! The best screenwriting learning experience I've had was taking Aaron Sorkin's screenwriting MasterClass. His class alone was worth the MasterClass superscription price. The guy is literally one of the most gifted & talented writers of our time.
Love your channel can't wait to work with yall someday!
Great information, delivered quickly and clearly. Thank you!
