Alex - you are normally spot on on info. However, the start, and therefore the premise of this video is fundamentally wrong. Dougie Edmunds and David Webster (god rest their souls) were a massive part of WSM - but not in 1977. In fact, its inception came from one of the most corporate operators who ever existed - Barry Frank. The trophy of WSM is named after him - The Barry Frank Memorial Trophy became the name of the WSM Champions trophy on his death. FYI - Barry Frank was once Muhammed Ali’s agent! He was an IMG Senior Exec after, I believe, being Head of CBS Sports. WSM came out of his head. He had other hit shows too. That may not be the sexiest fact for hardcore fans .... but it’s true. PS - I do love what you do and I hope you dont mind the necessary correction. PPS - Dougie had some involvement in the late 80s but really 1990 was his first event as Head Ref. David was around for quite a few years before that thanks to his friendship with the TV show color commentator Terry Todd was his friend and both Terry and therefore its likely that David’s knowledge indeed helped early shows - Though he did become Head Referee in the 80s when the BBC took over the show. However, it was the Olympic Champion in Hammer - Harold Connolly - who was its first referee. He - like almost every person working on it and indeed competing in it were American.

That explanation of how YouTube/social media is driving the growth of the sport is absolutely spot on. I know it’s anecdotal, but any casual fans of the sport that I talk to about strongman mentions Brian or Eddie’s YouTube channels or some other clip from social media. The only time anyone mentions WSM on tv is talking about how they used to watch it growing up.

I skipped to the end bits about the scoring and then the reach of strongman. And as a "younger" viewer I would say you are 100% right. The sport only became known and cool to people in my age group I know through fitness social media stuff. For me specifically it became interesting because of Hall and his channel initially and then I was in the algorithm from there. I don't have cable, so I was learning about the results from Eddies little videos which I thought were ok. Honestly if WSM wants to grow from where I sit, they should allow people like Eddie (and the other personalities of yore) to upload and stream these events and allow them to make actual videos. Instead of banning filming on the set of the events. Eddie was there and had a camera and could probably have given new viewers a more interesting look into the sport. I do appreciate his breakdown of the events and the pressures and challenges that each one would provide the athletes. Allow the creators and "celebs" time to chop up and edit their footage after the initial post and made into 50 different shorts. It would blow up just like those numbers on giants. I know as a creator Bromley, that you know YT loves their shorts. Then expand that too all the other social media platforms as well! It's a market they are leaving on the table at this point.

We're just at the point where it does not make sense to not add a livestream into the WSM contracting. Only the die hard fans will pay for a stream, the general population can still watch it 7 months later on TV. I'm a newish strongman fan and I have never cared about the WSM because I can't watch it, and I am sure a lot of the real fans of the sport feel the same way. Congratulations to Rayno though, I would have loved to see him surprise everyone.

The more I listen to this video, the more I realize Alex is jealous that Rayno won WSM at first invite. Lots of amateurs have an overhead weakness (supposedly he’s done Strongman for 2 years).. he beat everyone except Trey for max DL in the final
