I'm so glad you highlighted that not only does GPS provide position, but also time. In many industries the time synchronization is more important than the position.

"Why does our phone's GPS work so accurately?"

Meanwhile Google says my address is two blocks over.

@TheBilgepumper

Ocean vessels can also use bathymetric navigation. Submarines, for example, can use highly detailed bathymetric charts to determine their position very accurately without surfacing.

That's why I carry paper maps and compass. May not show exactly the location but doesn't require power or be jammed.

@gg-eo6ez

Let me just say that I really love this channel, I have been watching it for years and you have always given just the pure facts without any politics or personal opinions becoming involved. I love you!

@theblankettruth

This is my job. It’s fun to see videos that talk about it.

@AthAthanasius

06:55 - No, that's not how GPS works, because it would require the receiving device to have a highly accurate clock itself.

Instead the key thing to realise is that time is just another dimension and you can perform the trilateration (not triangulation, you at least got this correct) calculations in four dimensional space-time, assuming at least 5 satellites in view, to determine both your location and your time.

@ntdscherer

I don't know if you'll see this, but I wanted to tell you there have been several of your videos I only click because it's your channel. I know 100% it's going to be fascinating and informative.

@gg-eo6ez

In second grade the schools clock's hour hand began spinning really quickly, the teachers said something about a new system but it was so long ago I can't possibly remember. This corresponds to when you say civilians received full access to the GPS system. Awesome to learn about!

@AthAthanasius

As for issues with timestamps during a GPS outage... there's something called Network Time Protocol which relies only on working internet connections in order to determine the time to within a few milliseconds. This generally works well, although it should be said that this likely would start to drift during an extended GPS outage because many of the top stratum NTP servers utilise GPS themselves as a reference clock. There are some based on atomic clocks though.

Fortunately for me, I got my orienteering merit badge back in the 90s without GPS.

@MrJontte79

13:44 Not only in proximity to the conflict area; russia is jamming GPS signals in the border regions with and of Finland and The Baltics as well. Civilian aviation has been forced to switch to other means of navigation and landing, ones that are not as vulnerable to jamming, but require more attention from the pilots.

@hwats231

Thanks!

@BVN-TEXAS

I remeber when Clinton signed the order to remove selective availability.

It was a massive deal at the time. Our GPS went from having an error of 300-500 yards to a foot or two.

There was a couple of us nerds who actually had GPS receivers on watching the error level suddenly go from huge to a couple of feet.

INS can be recalibrated using the location any known object. A submarine passing an underwater stone, channel, sensor or unique contour of the bottom can pinpoint its location with its onboard electronics. A ship passing the same, a marker or land object. Stars can still be used to navigate with today's automation.
