IMO people will forget how great the beginning and the middle were if the ending is just a cop-out. They'll talk more about the bad anyways, but bad endings are just on another level. The ending has the obligation to be just the best it can be...

I HATED Top Gun Maverick. I had to turn it off it was so bad - couldn't finish it.

Even if there are infinite parallel universes with infinite potential realities, in none of them is Top Gun Maverick better than Top Gun. Maverick has a 30 year advantage in technology, but beyond that, Top Gun is better in every way.
