Taser-Company: "Don't aim at the chest!" Cops: primarily trained to aim for center mass - meaning the chest
I’ve been in medical practice for 30 years and had never heard of “excited delirium” until I worked with cops. The cops were really married to this idea and quite resistant to medical evidence and education.
Glad you brought up the point about talking to someone in crisis. I've been an emergency medical technician for more than 10 years, and in all that time, I've never had to ask police to intervene. People want to be heard. Don't subject them to stress, let them talk. It takes more time, but you get voluntary compliance, mental health care for those who need it, and zero chance of heart failure. Just listen. People respond very favorably when you let them talk themselves out.
It's telling that the Taser ad (1:43) says "less-lethal" rather than "non-lethal" technology. Also this -- surprisingly for an advertisement -- seems more honest than any other communication from that company.
I'm a retired police officer and it's my firm view that states and ultimately the federal government should require law enforcement agencies to submit standardized data every time a member of that agency uses any kind of force or threat of force where a threat involves pointing a firearm or a Taser at someone. Would it be some more work? Yes. Is that data critical to understanding the use of force throughout American policing? Absolutely.
'Excited Delirium' is like saying that a stab victim died of blood loss. Like, yeah- they sure did lose some blood there. I wonder what the hell CAUSED it.
I love how fearless John and his team are to report on all these huge corporations and government agencies
The fact that the "Don't Tase Me, Bro." Incident wasn't brought up once during this entire episode shows a lot of restraint for the show. 😂😂
Considering its origins I can’t believe “Excited Delirium” is not the new “Hysteria”
of all the things on this show I never expected The graphics department putting a small hole on Thicckachu has to be at the top
You're not allowed to go anywhere, John. You need to do this show forever.
I believe the biggest problem with tasers is that it is suggested they are basically harmless – so why bother with deescalation? That they are used on children is absolutely sick.
It's kind of wild that within seconds of looking into taser usage, you stumble on reports of police using them on already restrained/cuffed people. There isn't even a purpose to that anymore, it's just sadism at work...
I'm an EMT and in my EMT-B textbook from 2017 it went into depth about 'excited delirium', the symptoms, how to approach patients, etc. etc. It also said that these patients should not be tased due to the risk of cardiac arrest. When I went to advanced EMT school, the textbook (2023) had no mention whatsoever of excited delirium, and I know if we ever put a suspicion of 'excited delirium' in one of our reports we will get a talking to. It is absolutely verboten. My suspicion is this is primarily a cop term used to excuse them of a lot of things, it bled over to the EMT world, and we are finally ridding ourselves of this while the cops still want the CYA.
“Don’t use it on…. Anyone agitated” so don’t use it on anyone that might be in a scenario of like, I don’t know, fighting or fleeing the police
"Ride the lightning"? As in, an old term for being sentenced to the electric chair?
I’m surprised you all missed the fact that when tasers first came out, they were setting people on fire because of the reaction with the propellant used in pepper spray.
as someone with mental health struggles, i remember hearing someone talk about excited delirium on tiktok and being scared at the possibility that my panic attack could kill me. this woman was told by police that her husband in psychosis died of it…. i think they just didn’t know how to handle mental health. i’ve run into police while having a panic attack and im lucky all they did was sedate me even though i was fighting hard. i’m a small white woman. i’m sad for people who have experienced such trauma.
I talked with a biker once who told me that Tasers don't work that well, didn't work when a cop tased him. In his words, "It made me sh** my pants, but just got me madder. And I kept fighting."
