I'll never forget what my late grandfather foretold me about my career after graduating college that there will be many twists and turns, and many opportunities will arise in the future. His wisdom is very timeless, indeed.

Started a new job after getting laid off almost a year ago. In ultra cash-saving mode since day 1. Not stock, just high-yield savings accounts. Nothing like have a fat wad of emergency cash in the bank if you get laid off. You won't be freaking out about how you will pay bills...at least for a while. Allows you more time to process.

This job market is beyond a joke!!! It has killed my passion for work and given my faith in society a serious blow! Do CEO's and majority shareholders really not see the issue with devastating the balance of supply and demand in the job market? Do they really think they can't end up like Brian Thompson?

They think of us as nothing more than commodities. They don't deserve our labour. I hate them and you should too!

@TNTinFL

As an older worker, let me also add a few things: make sure you perform effective long term financial planning. Have a retirement strategy or outline in place. Make sure you have a well funded emergency fund.
And always focus on continuous improvement, especially if you are in tech. If you stick to just a few technologies where you are a domain expert, keep in mind that if they fall out of favor, you will make yourself obsolete. Don't be afraid to learn new things to keep yourself current.

@matticus11

Check your HRMS to print your W2's and recent paystubs, always a hassle to get these after a layoff.

@SoulSeasons-t2c

Would love a follow-up on how to deal with the emotional side of being laid off—like confidence, identity, and mental health.

@megank3412

I am a Gen Xer with a few years left in my career. It has become SO HARD keeping up a network. Most of my former colleagues and managers have aged out and the younger workers seem uninterested in networking and keeping up relationships.

@Yasmine91646

I will prepare by getting out of the cities. This job market issue is a symptom of something that is deeply wrong with society entirely.

@nicholasrosen6342

I've had jobs before where people looked down on me, said I didn't have a "real job" or asked me if I wanted to advance in my career, almost never making an offer for me or show their business card. Fortunately for now I'm working a job I (generally) like.

@cammyspot

Welp, just received the news at my company that due to our biggest client taking their business back, I will be out of a job. The shining light is that I have until the end of the year before this happens as there is a contractual agreement in place. I would often watch this content causally as I work but I am going to be fully plugged into your content now.

@nicholasrosen6342

My brother used to have a job helping people, even those where their English was a 2nd language. Unfortunately he got laid off and just told me that the reason was "it's a long story." As for me and my job, I have yet to hear of either mine or my coworkers jobs are on the chopping block, so you could try to build up money on your savings, open an emergency fund account or find some kind of savings strategy to fall back on and hold you for a while till you find your next job.

@Avarn388

Great. Here I am trying to change a job profession and layoffs happen. Some luck I have. Thank you for making the videos. I hope you know that i appreciate your efforts.

@LauraNiebauer

A few thoughts! In terms of your resume, make sure you have copies of past performance reviews and forward yourself emails that outline achievements (especially with specific numbers/data points since these are easy to forget over time!) and keep a "master" resume which lists everything (this isn't used when applying for jobs but rather is a resources for you to pull from when tailoring your resume). And while yes, networking is key don't overlook people outside the "typical" network. As a mom, there are a number of groups I'm a part of outside of the professional setting yet all of these women are either working or have worked, leading to a larger network of people (weak ties) that can potentially help in your job search if you just ask. Informational interviews can lead to insights, mentorships and yes even job openings! As someone who has worked in HR for decades and navigated my way back to the paid workforce after a career break, it's important to take control of your job search otherwise you'll feel out of control which just leads to stress! Good luck to everyone looking for positions!!

@jessty-00

You should ALWAYS be polishing up your resume, applying, and interviewing, layoffs or no.

This video posted literally minutes after I was hearing about a layoff

@CaptWavecrash

The timing of this video was impeccable. Just recently a corporate project I was working at is going belly up, making layoffs imminent.
