America has prioritized Wealth, Fame, and Power over Character.
Genuinely one of the most honest and meaningful conversations I've heard in American discourse in a long time. It's an odd mixture of hopefulness and dismay that washes over me. We need more conversations like this.
I started this interview rolling my eyes at an old person talking about character and by the end of the interview really engaged in the conversation. He spoke so well and openly that it really broke through to me.
Gen McChrystal just showed us a masterful class in honesty, integrity & patriotism
“Reputation is what men think of us. Character is what angels know of us.”
No, Jon. It's not "basic cable." It's YouTube. It's FB Reels. It's Insta. And you are a born leader, with tons of integrity.
The character of this man and Jon Stewart are so far and above any single soul in this current government. I so miss sanity, kindness, honesty, acceptance… all traits so really very simple if you GIVE A DAM ABOUT ANY OTHER THING THAN YOU!!!!
He’s right. We’ve lost the shared national sense of “character.” I remember telling my daughters when they were very young, that they each needed to think deeply & decide what kind of person they wanted to be. It had a bigger impact than I expected. I was a military mom & had to be away a lot, which often broke my heart. But I never worried about either of them getting in trouble - they had decided early to be problem solvers & try to make the world a better place. I couldn’t ask for more. Children are wise when we give them people to look up to & empower them to shape their own character.
General McChrystal is the epitome of what is possible in government and in life. He didn't brag, he didn't bloviate, and he didn't exaggerate. He didn't have to or need to. His wisdom and truth resonated in his words and his demeanor.
I TRIED to tell people “Do NOT vote based on promisesd policies . Vote based on character “. People didn’t understand. Hopefully they will going forward
Thank you for having him on. I am a scoutmaster with a troop of 62 boys. Every meeting ends with a Scoutmaster Minute that is something to give the scouts something to think about for the week. This clip has given me a great idea for one. ❤
Empathy is the greatest equalizer we have as humans, and it is more vital than ever. I cant wait to read this book someday.
12:29 John the young do watch your show. I am a young person and I don’t come from America America yet I look up to you. This is one of your best guests and he’s right we need to re-examine who we are not just in America, but I believe in the entire Western world. Please portray this message give it light. He’s right you have a voice use it. We need it now more than ever.
A powerful reminder that character is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. Thank you, General McChrystal, for advancing a conversation the world urgently needs in this moment. We will be sharing your interviews and clips with our community as we build a movement around how character isn’t just built in moments of crisis, but in the small, often unseen choices we make every day, in how we lead, how we teach parent, how we teach, how we show up for one another. We’re grateful to see momentum around this issue taking root across generations and sectors. The stakes couldn’t be higher and the need for moral clarity, deeper.
I agree with Stahley that Jon is one of the most important voices of our time.
Thank you for giving General McChrystal air time and respectfully hearing him out. He gave his career to the country and earned a fair hearing. Sadly, if he is remembered at all it will be for his involvement in Afghanistan as a paragraph in a book like Halberstam’s Best and Brightest or Tuchman’s March of Folly.
General McChrystal, thank you for your leadership.
It's always great to hear from officers who have honor and integrity. Just from listening to the general speak and carry himself, you can tell what type of person the secretary of defense is.
His point to the responsibility we share toward each other is soooo salient right now. Mad respect.
