Mom: “We have Life at home sweetie.” Life at home:
First, thank you for posting the video. I would never have guessed that counterfeit board games could be so elaborate. I've come across bootleg DVDs and Blu-rays on eBay, and I even enjoy collecting knockoff action figures because of all the quirky mistakes. But seeing a fake board game with entirely new graphics on both the box and the board itself is surprising. Usually, counterfeiters lift existing designs, so this is interesting. On a side note, when shopping on Amazon or Walmart through third-party vendors, there’s usually a reason for a price that seems too good to be true.
I was talking about your channel today with my parents. I'm 40 now and I go to visit my parents often to still have a board game day. Today we played some classics, Bargin hunter (an old 1981 mall shopping game), payday (a calender style game), and Go for it (a calender/ life items game). All where old games from the 60s to the 80s and classics from my childhood. So much fun, love board games.
I recognized right away that most of the box art is from "Add Pets to Your Life" edition. All the dog and cat pegs are missing from the pictures though. Also, the instructions are laid out exactly the same (how it's folded and everything!). Only difference is the Pet space instructions are replaced with the Vacation space instructions. "Add Pets to Your Life" has five different decks of cards too: Career, College Career, House, Action, and Pet Cards :) And that is definitely the "Add Pets" game board design too! Not a robot design. It is busy but in a fun way with many choices to make! Glad mine is from Hasbro, though because this board is not flimsy lol :) Wow! I just noticed they included the "Spin to Win" tokens too! The counterfeiters were very dedicated to make this game look legit
Talk about making the best of a bad situation! Great vid, pretty interesting. Always appreciate your positivity, even in this situation where no one would blame you for just cursing for 20 minutes lol Keep up the great work, and hopefully you dont get any more counterfeits lol
Isn't anything sacred anymore? Friggan counterfeiting board games, for crying out loud! Really wish I still have my vintage 1970's edition of The Game of Life (may actually be 1960's).
Bootleg editions of board games, you say? You had my interest before but now you have my full attention!
Hilariously, the vacation cards are taken from the official mobile version of Life, where there are spots that send you on vacation where you can collect photos/postcards that are worth points at the end of the game.
I used to play this game at my aunt's and uncle's so much as a kid. It was an edition with green 3d hills and hedges. I have yet to find that edition again.
I believe there are 3 main versions I would like to see. The 1960s version (which was actually reprinted in 2022!); the 1991 version, which was a big update to how it played; and then whatever is the latest version. (I hope all my info is correct) Reading wikipedia, apparently there are a few more versions, with various other changes.
Reminds me of when I went to a discount shop called Shiploads here in my part of Australia - I saw a counterfeit version of Hungry Hungry Hippos that, below the official version of the logo, said "Real Game Set, Completely new to come into the market!". Amazing.
It's so interesting that they go so far as to make entirely new art when every other possible corner was cut. I mean they straight up copy and pasted the logo.
The retailer is absolutely to blame if they provide a welcoming platform for scammers. Which they do.
I had a quick look online and I think I found an official version of the game that is using the same box art/manual style/nearly the same game board art.. just with the real branding on it. Sadly couldn't tell which region/year the art was for.. but the date of the images were from around 2014.
Random comments: 1. A video with the history of playing cards and teaching how to play Poker and other games (Texas Hold ´em) that can be played with that deck. Please. Always wanted learn to and, since you appeared into my life, it must mean something. :) 2. A video about Puerto Rico. More so since it can be compared with just the card version (San Juan) . Also, recently, cause of its anniversary they were releasing several "upgrades" to it. 3. Finally, a video about Chinese Checkers. Always liked that game. More so than regular Checkers.
Counterfeit games are a growing problem. Seems to be fueled by so much manufacturing being outsourced, since lifting a design straight from the production line is quick and difficult to trace. Got burned myself a few years ago with what claimed to be a copy of the Z-Man edition of Carcassone, only it wasn’t. Passed casual muster, but was “off” in the details. Hard to believe it is worth the effort to counterfeit such a thing, but that is the world we live in.
The counterfeit version seems to be based on an actual version of The Game of Life. Hasbro has released a Tripadvisor Edition at one point (I would guess 10 year ago or so) that looks like the counterfeit version except that it features a "Tripadvisor Edition" label on that green diamond-shaped box on the front cover.
Hope you keep it. Kind of cool to have
Hello mr couch. You just unlocked a new world. Im from mexico. A very country sided region. I didnt play with an "original" board game until i went to high school. Here bootlegs and counterfeits are so common. Nowadays is easier to get original games. But still some too "traditional" loteria. Serpientes y escaleras, turista( you totally need to check it) as a collector. Keep the counter and i wll be amazing if you also review them. Boardgames stills a expensive hobby. But if people can grab a game for 10-20 bucks i think is ok
