This didn't work on the vast majority of payphones even before this movie came out. It only worked when payphones were on special lines to the phone company and used in bound signaling. By the late 80s and early 90s inbound signaling was mostly phased out for out of bound signaling and this was more due to people using blue boxes to get special lines for making long distance calls and setting up their own party lines. The recording trick only kind of worked and usually was better to just build a blue box. But the long distance calls and party lines was a bigger hit financially for them and so they switched to out of bound signaling.

Cheesy movie, but its a cult classic as far as I'm concerned. Watched it as a kid and loved it, watching it as an adult and still love it. But '90s fashion was truly awful.

Man I wanted to be a hacker so badly when I was a kid, but I lived in a shitty place with barely any computer and no knowledge to gain whatsoever. Modern day hackers suck ass. They never do anything useful, only trying to scam and hack little people while leaving the megacorps alone. Despicable. Classic movie that dreamt that people would be better.
