The excessive plastic surgery starts to make them look unnatural and scary, then they end up aging faster.
Having spent twelve years living in Korea, I have acquaintances who are nurses who regularly lament having to take over junior doctor positions and are overworked. The other major issue South Korea has is the taboo around mental health; throw that into the mix and consider the strain the nurses must be under.
Point is that everyone knows that there's shortage of doctors in major fields, and also doctors keep complaining about their work loads. However, doctors don't want increase of the number of doctors due to their profitabilty. What a contradiction!
The obsession with youth and beauty is a mental illness. No matter what you do, we're all going to get old and die. I would rather age gracefully and enjoy life to the fullest before worrying about what others think of me physically.
You're highlighting such a bizarre contrast. We're prioritizing superficial looks and judgemental wellbeing over basic services. This road is a blind alley.
I've gone to 3 of these clinics. Little piece of advice I want to give based on my experience is that if you have the time, go to a clinic that DOESN'T advertise itself to foreigners/tourists. The clinics that the local Koreans use are much better and cheaper. Many of the doctors speak English too. I went to a clinic in Gangnam that was recommended online and was extremely disappointed with it compared to the other smaller local clinics I went to.
The issue of healthcare supply in Korea is not something that should be viewed solely from doctors’ perspectives. They claim they work tens of hours a week for meager wages, as though they are being severely overworked. However, medical fields such as doctors, dentists, veterinarians, and pharmacists are among the most popular career paths in Korea. The country maintains an admissions system where universities and majors are determined by a single exam, and those who score highest enroll in medical schools first. Only after all medical schools and other medical-related majors across the country have filled their quotas do applicants begin to consider engineering schools. In other words, Korea’s top talents invariably head to medical school. It even makes the news if a high-scoring student chooses not to pursue medicine. The reason behind this phenomenon is that doctors in Korea earn about ten times as much as the average office worker. Korea has grown through the hands of outstanding engineers at companies like Samsung and Hyundai, but increasingly, talented individuals are flocking to medical schools, causing Korea’s businesses to lose international competitiveness. The annual increase of one to two thousand medical school admissions was implemented in this context. There are currently about 160,000 doctors in Korea. Yet, they have rejected even the slightest increase in competition that might result from adding just one to two thousand more doctors each year, hindering the nation’s progress with a collective strike that has lasted for over a year.
Face says "25", but the body says "45". As we age, our bodies change...eat wisely, drink water, get sleep...age gracefully.
the success of Korean Plastic Surgery industry says a lot about the state of korean genes
I'd never known about how prevalent plastic surgery was until I traveled to Seoul, they were everywhere! Next to movie theatres, in most malls, etc
My wife (Thai) got eyelid surgery less than a year ago & I told her that I didn't think she needed it & it resulted in her crying because it's something that she's wanted since childhood. It's very ingrained & even her mom said she wanted it at an earlier stage of life. It's hard to fight back against such societal pressure. In Thailand there are clinics everywhere & it's really normalised. They don't seem to go too extreme with it compared to the west & almost never get the Kim K look (It's a lot more subtle) for them eye's seem to be the big draw.
Just be careful. Number of "ghost doctors" in korean plastic surgical centers are rising and its absolutely horrifying. Its where they have too many surgeries scheduled in one day, and while the so called consult physician will do the initial surgery until you are put to sleep, an intern or at best a resident/ non licensed physician and or RN will take over, until the main surgeon is done with the next 3 or 5 surgeries double booked for the day. Number of people who have died from bleeding out while RN was texting on their cell doing "compression" and or ghost doctor doing sutures while leaving gauze inside the wound; etc goes on. A patient died with his 75% of his blood bleeding out on the floor, only to be transferred to an ICU 12 hours after the initial intake because they were too busy to even notice it as the doctor was booked back to back. Korean legal system favors the rich and the powerfuls, so doctors have an absolute advantage when it comes to medical malpractice. In above case, they were found not guilty and considered honest mistake. I am korean- i know the industry. I did my intern year at Yonsei University hospital before I switched my career. Just be very careful. USing an Agency does NOT change a single thing as they have zero influence or transparency to these doctors and their schemes.
profiting off people's insecurities sure is lucrative
healthcare just has nothing to do with cosmetic skincare
I'm Korean. Many Korean parents give their daughters double eyelid surgery as high school graduation gifts. 👀
It took Gen X and Gen Y in India years to challenge the white beauty standard and get companies like Unilever to stop focusing on white skin tones. In terms of establishing unattainable expectations, K-beauty is currently emerging as the new troublemaker. Pop culture and advertisements have conditioned Gen Z and Gen Alpha to believe they are not attractive enough. People under 25 now make up 70% of plastic surgery patients in India, thanks to K-pop and K-dramas influence.
Say no to plastic
You remain beautiful unless you have a real medical emergency. In which case, you're on your own.
when there is a global economic crisis, one of the field that is unaffected is beauty and cosmetics industry.
