Our immigration system is flawed and needs an overhaul. That being said, we are still a sovereign nation and are entitled to protection of our borders. I'm sorry that something came up with his family and he forgot to come paperwork, but it's still his responsibility.

Wouldn’t it be interesting to consider why the federal government is able to mobilize the full intelligence capabilities of the state to track, locate, apprehend, and deport suspected undocumented workers, yet seems to face greater complexity, challenges, or even outright difficulties when it comes to addressing high-level criminal leaders, their enforcers, scouts, and traffickers in a similarly effective manner? What do you think might explain this discrepancy in approach and capability?

The company should have helped Mateo keep track of his visa. It is in their interest to do that so they don't lose a valuable employee. They failed.

From somebody to travel abroad, let me say America is a loving parent compared to most of these places. They really need to step up their game. Your plane can get delayed on your last day of Visa and watch and see what happens you spend the entire time in immigration with an officer staring right at you or you go to a cell.

I’ve overstayed in a country and been put in immigration detention and sent out of the country. 🇨🇷 Costa Rica I’ve never whined about it. Ppl know the risks if they don’t there idiots

Come legally and you won’t have this problem. I came to the USA in the late 80’s from Iran and i did it legally. There wasnt a embassy that i could go to i had to go to a safe third country and waited years to get political asylum.

In Switzerland, it is the state who contact you when your work permit is about to expire, avoiding the oopsies. This is how a good country act.

My father in law was in basically the same scenario. He came to the United States legally in 1978 and never left. Fast forward to 2016 and he finally decided he should be a legal US citizen and filed the paperwork. The act of him filing the pout him on their radar and they arrested him at his ranch. He was here for over 40 years paying taxes, owned 2 homes and sent both his daughters to college but was nonetheless arrested and had to go through the process. He’s originally from chihuahua Mexico and his ranch is less than 50 miles from where he grew up, he says the border crossed him. 😂 He’s gotten his citizenship now, but it was sketchy for awhile.

This is not the way it is working at this moment regardless of what the laws and regulations say. The rule of law no longer applies. He will arrested and sent out of state as far from help as possible, his attempts to contact a lawyer will be frustrated, he may be moved to several states to frustrate judicial review, he will be put on a plane and moved outside the USA before he or his family can file a complaint. Any ruling by a Federal Judge including SCOTUS will be ignored or skirted. His country of expedition may not be his home nation, he may be branded a gang member without evidence or due process and shipped to the famed 'torture prison' in El Salvador.

This is probably best case scenario. Most of the time, they only have an administrative warrant, which is not the same thing and does not authorize them to make arrests. But they bully the employer to comply, and that is illegal.

May I note. That a mother and her daughters were recently traumatized. When ice busted in broke windows, trash the house and made them stand outside. Not even having the ability to get dressed in their UNDERWEAR not a chance to speak (not as if their listen anyway)No warning and guess what! It was the wrong family.
