Most everyone working at NASA during the space race programs and missions were contractors.They were hired because they were specialists and experts in thier specific fields. Experts that NASA and the government either didn't have or have enough of. And this is the case until this day with most government projects. Being a contractor does not make their testimonies and statements less valid. If anything, because the were not government employees, I would trust them more.
