Two of the drill instructors present in the beginning when they are getting off the bus are the same drill instructors I met during basic training back in late October of 2024.

My father was drafted into the Marine Corps after receiving his draft notification for the Army in the early ‘40s during WWII. While he was in the induction station in Los Angeles, he and 9 other men were waiting in the room with the white squares on the floor when a Marine Sgt. and two other Marines walked in. The Sgt. said I need 10 volunteers to follow me, you, you, and so on and my Father was one of the ten. He thought it was going to be some sort of working detail until they arrived at another room with ten open squares. The Marine Sgt. then told everyone in the room “Welcome to the United States Marine Corps.” My Father went on to fight in the Pacific theater and was wounded on Okinawa. When I graduated high school in ‘74, my Father and Mother took me to the recruiting center in our city. I spoke to recruiters from then Army, Navy, Air Force and they seemed unmotivated, like they were reading from a script. The last recruiter was the Marines. When I turned the corner in the hallway, I saw a very large Marine Gunnery Sgt. standing in the door way to his office. I walked up to him and asked if I could talk to him about the Marines. He stood about 6’4” and looked to weigh 250 lbs. of all muscle. He looked down at me (6’0”) and said “ what the hell do you want?!” I said “I want to ask questions about joining the Marines.” He told “You don’t pack the gear to serve in MY Marine Corps.” He then turned and walked in to his office and told me to sit down. We talked for about 30-45 minutes then my Mother and Father took me out to lunch. I told my Father that I had decided to join the Marines because the other three recruiters weren’t motivated. My Father asked me if I was sure and I told I was. He told me it was going to be the toughest thing I would ever do but I wouldn’t regret a single minute AND I would be part of the biggest brotherhood in the world. My Father was right, IT WAS the hardest thing I ever did and I DON’T REGRET A SECOND OF MY TIME IN THE CORPS. The first “WM” is saw was during boot camp at MCRDSD (Plt. 3105) in ‘74 when I was the plt. runner. I was sent to an admin office for something and a “WM” was at the desk. She was a warrant officer and that just screwed me all up. I was so nervous that I called her Sir instead of Ma’am, got tongue tied, it was a mess. She finally calmed me down so I could complete my task but it left me all shook up. Fun times and better memories. Once a Marine, always a Marine! Semper Fi!!!

@eltonjohnson1724

I went through USMC Boot Camp in 1977 at MCRD-San Diego. We didn't see a female Marine until our Graduation Day...there was a female Marine in the band. It looks like things have changed a lot since then.

@lonniegilmore5755

January 29, 2001, I stood on the yellow footprints at Parris Island, 1st Battalion, Platoon 1032, Senior Drill Instructor Staff Sgt. Clancey, DI Sgt. Demalteris, and DI Sgt. Booth. Best decision I ever made!

@MarkLizon

PLT 3019, 1969 Paris Island . Saw our first female DI. She didn't like us us eyeballing her recruits. Damn , she was hot. Thanks for the memories. Semper Fi.

@wtflightningstaff8038

Still remember to this day the day I arrived on the island 3 years ago. SSGT Jones 2036 echo company 2 battalion was a good DI.

@FLYBOY123456789

ahhhh the good ole days...the best trained fighting force in the world...no finer friend or worst enemy...

@matthewfusco2835

Man males and females training together. Back in the day we had no doors on the stalls and showers were a group function. I can’t imagine how this works now.

@paulbatts9585

Wow being yelled at by a woman didn't know the marines train their soldiers for marriage 😂😂😂😂

@lancecahill5486

It must be tough to basically have 2 different personalities: One as a DI and one as an ordinary person at home.

@CAPEjkg

Went through boot camp at the Island in 94. We would occasionally pass the female platoon, and if you got caught you were asked to join the females.

@frankbaine3918

As a career USArmy tankist, who had Devil Dogs on my team many times. I'M proud of our Marines! And being a DI in any branch requires the very best. We see that here for sure. Male or female, DI's are smart, fit, dedicated & tough.

@Prfdt3

Im glad Chesty Puller didn't live to witness female drill instructers and co ed boot camp.Its a slap in the face to the old Corps.

@sergiogarcia6724

My drill sargent in my compulsory military service never shout as and we made the drill at the first time. He spoke calmy with low voice and we were the best platoon. Other drill instructor shout like a mad man like those and the troop learned moro slowly and with more mistakes.

@2AFamily2025

I was in the Army but this still back memories of basic training back in 1996 in Ft Knox, KY.

@LesterMoore

Thank God I went through Marine boot camp during the Vietnam War era of the late 60s.

I don't believe I can be serious with a Drill Instructor that wasn't a combat Marine.

@LESLASLESLAS

Female drill instructors just remind me of toddlers throwing temper tantrums. It’s just kinda cute and annoying at the same time.

@AP-te6mk

Hah, takes me back seeing recruit training again. These ladies nailed the DI role. They're pretty fucking good. We didn't have female DIs amongst the men when I went in, and i'm kinda glad we didn't. I'd 100% be getting IT'd the entire time for staring lmao. Some of them are fine af.

@mikekinsella2822

I just laughed at them when I was in ( 1985). They trying to sound all tough. You can't take them serious. I remember one yelling into the chest of a guy in my platoon. shes like 5,2 and he was 6,3. I was a few rows back from him and It took everything I had not to bust out laughing at her. I kept thinking maybe she should stand on a chair or something to get up to his face LMFAO!!!!

@AP-yb8ji

Hoorah!!! More PT Drill Instructor more PT. Love the Corp. Discipline and structure is something most civilians will never get. I see the posts of people mocking instructors. I laugh at the people posting negative comments for not getting the USMC structure and principles. They will never get it. Sempre Fi.
