Beyond navigation, the countless hours I have spent on Google Maps looking at remote places, planning backcountry trips, wandering through other cities, or just exploring the world has enriched my life and my geographical awareness immeasurably.

@LawrenceMarkFearon

A real miracle of technology who's power cannot be overstated. Those who remember the paper mapping navigation days understand how heroic Google Maps really are. What a time to be alive.

@mx0x0

A sibling travelled to a country I had been to previously. I wanted him to make a purchase for me from a store I fell in love with. I sent him screenshots with turn by turn directions to the store.

I didnt have to give him cryptic directions. He didn't have to struggle with street names in a foreign language. He went directly there and made my purchase.

Thanks Google Maps!

@mackpines

Who else is such a Google Maps nerd that they look up places just for the fun of it?
I always find somewhere new and interesting.

@edybanks

Google maps is literally a life saver

@Suresh_Jayaraman

I am glad Maps is staying out of too many Ads and really not gotten very greedy to generate more revenue.. YET.! I am a local guide with Maps for several years (level 8) with 5500 photos and 89,539,940 views till date. I have written close to 300 reviews. I will continue to contribute as long as Maps stays the way it is now with respect to user experience and not showing Ads in between like youtube and other platforms.

@friedmangobean

i remember the map quest print-out era 😭 i was sooo young.. these informative videos are my favvvs

@trappedcat3615

When you complete a captcha, you are training the Map about traffic lights, crosswalks, and motorcycles.

@liviurosca

As a truck driver in Europe, Google Maps it’s my favourite app and obviously the most useful. You can see the delivery places, even read instructions on the gates with street view.
I hope in the future they will add truck support for bridges, weight/height limits, etc. That’s will be a game changer.

@reggiethecommenter9137

I am 50. The advances in mapping since I started driving in 1992 is mindboggling. I had a map books in my car for the first 10+ years of driving.

@balamus

Google maps should get the Nobel prize in economics, think of all the commerce enabled by Google maps, before and after its advent.

@positivityplace

Watching this documentary brought back memories of the early days of Google Earth when users could create placemarks and leave comments. Back in 2005-2006, I labeled a pothole-filled street in my town as 'the worst street in Stanislaus County' and uploaded photos. To my surprise, a Sacramento TV station picked it up, did a story on it, and the city ended up fixing the road! I also worked with my dad to name villages in the Sierra Madre that weren’t on the map at the time. It’s amazing to see how Google Earth empowered everyday people to document history and make real-world changes. The evolution with AI today is fascinating, but I’ll always remember those early days when we could leave our mark in such a personal way.

@joel-s4w8x

I grew up using paper maps and an atlas when I went on long trips. This generation has no idea how much easier it is to get around now when you're traveling.

@gouthamsrinivas700

Am I the only one who hasn't heard about Moovit

@carlos64030

I found this episode quite fascinating for I am an avid user of Google Maps and have been using it since it's early beginning. It certainly has improved A LOT throughout the years, but it still baffles me that out of AAAAALLLLLLLL the data and imagery Google Maps collect, the team does NOT provide commercial truck restriction information or truck routes. I would LOOOOOOVE to hear someone explain why Google Maps won't go down that road... (pun intended).

@eliporter3980

I remember when I was in my early 20s printing out a mapquest map to drive 3 hours to meet a broad I met on the internet 😂. It was the furthest I've ever driven at the time. Mapquest gonna always hold a special place in my heart

@ismailarslangiray

I travel SE Asia with motorcycle and it is amazing how detailed the google maps are almost in every country and let me navigate easily. Especially using apple play. In my recent Hong Kong trip , it even let me go to my hotel with multiple options. I know there are lots google maps haters but compare to the other maps, this much better complete and easy to use.

@BRBallin1

I’m terrible at remembering directions and I highly appreciate Google Maps for its ability to not only get around outdoors but also within in large campuses

@jimbrutan_senior

Google in general is incredible
