To put the Roman republic down to its knees, even for a short time, solely due to his brilliance, genius, wit and determination, yea Hannibal Barca truly deserves his place in history.
Cannae was a disastrous defeat for Rome, but it also marked a turning point for Hannibal. Hannibal had planned for a short, decisive war, and hoped the Romans would sue for peace as any logical nation would. Of course, they did not. Hannibal did carve out a large amount of territory in southern Italy, but given that a lot of the southern Italians there fought on his side, he couldn’t exploit the land as much as he truly needed. The Romans never again tried to confront Hannibal with such a large force, instead choosing to use Fabian strategy. Eventually Hannibal was diminished to just a nuisance in Bruttium by the time Scipio landed in Africa. I have absolutely enjoyed this series and I highly recommend joining to become a patron/channel member!

Time to watch 100th Battle of Cannae themed video, but this time from a favourite creator 😅
Glad to see a Hannibal/Cannae video! One of the biggest strategic masterpieces of any era.
Behold!!!! The battle which has been covered and reviewed by countless channels, but still excites and makes us curious. I wonder what kind of new perspective it will open up for us this time.
I just wanted to say that props to Paulus. He did not lose hope until the last moment, and when he was given a chance to flee he refused, choosing to die with his soldiers and with his last words he still thought about defending Rome. Also, if I had a nickel when a Paulus led an army that was encircled and refused to flee, I would have two nickels... Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice twice
Love this channel. I am a History professor and put all my lectures on YouTube as a free resource. Most of my videos provide a survey course level introduction to historical topics, so it's nice to have channels like this that do more of a deep dive.
The Battle of Cannae is a masterclass in strategy and a chilling reminder of how brilliance on the battlefield can rewrite history. Hannibal’s tactics were nothing short of genius—this episode captures the scale, drama, and devastation perfectly. ⚔🐘
This battle will live in the annals of history forever. For Hannibal to manage to pull this off considering that his army was a mix of different people and cultures, language barriers and everything that comes with it. It's the perfect battle.
Rome before Canae : Courage and honour! Rome after Canae : When he approach, we run away.
Just as good as I remember! Can't wait for Saturday's episode about the Battle of Metaurus
Obviously I've seen so many videos on Cannae, however I always learn something new from each one :) Thank you for uploading this, I thoroughly enjoyed it :)
I absolutely love the use of the music of Carthage in civilization 5 at the start of the video, great work and attention to detail!
Our greatest triumphs often come from our greatest defeats. This is an example of it. I love the detail of all the small battles described before, during and after the main battle. Thank you, Kings and Generals!!
By the far the most in depth punic wars series I'm glad I joined the membership
The membership archive is legitimately very very good. I was genuinely happily surprised by the quantity and quality. It’s always nice not to have to choose between those qs.
What an iconic battle, thank you for your excellent video on it! The Second Punic War is worth the subscription to watch these when they come out by itself, but the other exclusives are just as good.
