I taught my daughter the old way and ditched the "new" way. When the teacher called I told her that I was raising an intelligent kid, not a disturbed one. My daughter passed with an A.

@kaydee2054

My husband and i homeschooled our son until 3rd grade. He was already doing multiplication and division when his classmates were still struggling with addition and subtraction. Math remains his best subject and he was taught the original way...the way i learned as a child

@oromis16

That was a hell of a lot more work than when I was taught.

@akionlizard

That is an awful AWFUL way to teach children math. Get him out of that school immediately

@justacrazycamper

Public education: making America dumber with every generation. (Secret - It wasn't an accident.)

@walterrankin200

I taught math to troubled youth and when I showed them the way I did it. They were amazed and said why didn't they teach us that way. I said because they think you are stupid and they are wrong

@adndragon9156

Math should never change unless you find a FASTER method to solving the problem.

@Johnno47

I was so confused at school in the mid 1980s, the school would teach math one way but my dad who went to school in the 1940s learnt a different way.
He would insist I learn his way much to my teachers annoyance.
Thanks dad. šŸ‡¦šŸ‡ŗ

@markedwards768

I'm a retired engineer. I have an excellent grasp of mathematics. But when my granddaughter brought me her common core math homework I was totally confused.
I swear, it made no sense.

@nikkimouseclubhouse

Literally so grateful for normal math solving techniques. The "new" way broke my brain

@craighansen7594

That is proof that just because it is the "newest way" the old proven way could still be better.

@Missilynn

Common core math is the downfall of our gov educational system. Its ridiculous

@aryanwitheredone

If it is not broken, DON'T FKN FIX IT

@muppit666

When my stepdaughter was having trouble with her maths years ago, I sat down with her to help her with her homework, long division. I wrote down a few similar sums and showed her how to work it out. Her eyes lit up and she went ā€œThat’s easier than the way we’re taught in schoolā€. I set a couple of practice sums for her and then watched her do her homework. She nailed it. Next day she comes home from school in tears with 0/20 on her homework, because in her teacher’s words ā€œThat’s not how we do itā€. She had all the right answers and showed her working out. Had to send the wife up to the school to sort it out because I’m not as diplomatic as her.
Why make it harder for kids to learn? When I did maths at school we had a great teacher who used to intersperse what he called number magic in our lessons which made it interesting and fun.

@blackqueen7147

That’s why I taught my son math before he started school!! He’s 16 now and keeps straight A’s and also is in Math Club and also helps his peers who may need assistance!! I’m so proud of him! So happy I taught him the way I was taught! School is really a breeze for him! We are our children first teachers!

@FranfranNotAMan

It’s about developing a deeper understanding. Math is not just a process it a way of thinking

@KevinMauldin-u7q

My daughter was struggling with math until I taught her how I was taught in the 80's. Teacher called me and told me I couldn't teach her my way... I didn't listen and she graduated with a 3.98 GPA unweighted and 4.34 weighted.

@VintageRayne

I’ll never forget the day my FIRST GRADER came home from school with math homework & I had to call his teacher to explain why his homework wasn’t done. I couldn’t understand the nonsense. šŸ˜‚

@jilliev.87

This is to cause confusion between generations. Now those of us who know cursive can write secret messages in plain sight. 😊

@aliciagrebey-hosmun404

I had a problem with this new way. I spoke to my sons principal about it and she too though it just makes things difficult. She told me it was the last year under that curriculum and for the parents just to teach their kids the way they know as long as the answer is right. WHY MAKE DIFFICULT THINGS MORE DIFFICULT?!
