lol now we have sketchbook police ... good grief. Keep doing you Katie!
I can't believe people are telling you that your sketchbook is wrong! It's just the tool and we all use them differently, just with any other art. Keep making and sharing your beautiful sketchbooks 🤗
When you start getting haters, Katie, you know you’ve made it 💕 Congratulations on yet another milestone of your well deserved success! 😂
A sketchbook is whatever you make of it. I would have never thought that in this artsy world people would be so darn judgemental and talk about "right" or "wrong". Art is always right because we make it. It does not have to be "pretty" to anyone else, it does not have to be "right" to anyone else. We as the artist are the only ones whose opinions matter when it comes to our art. We need to stop comparing ourselves to others and just love the process of creating art and feel the joy of completing a piece, just like you always teach, Katie. Love your work!
Imagine having the audacity to tell someone they’re using a sketchbook wrong!! I’m sorry you felt you needed to justify your art. Loved watching this joyful spread of work 😍
Goodness me - if someone is insisting there’s a ‘wrong’ way to use a sketchbook, it usually says more about their own limiting beliefs or need for ‘rules’ in their own creativity. They might feel intimidated, insecure, or fixed in their mindset about how they think sketchbooks should be used. Your finished-looking pages could challenge their idea of what “process” looks like. And sometimes their discomfort is projected as critique. My two cents
It's quite upsetting when people try to police other's people creativity and hobbies. There are so many ways one can use THEIR sketchbook. Its lovely what you do and how you inspire others to create. Because at the end of the day that's the ultimate goal, to express ourselves in our work, however we want ☺️
Hi Katie, oh my goodness aren't people so judgmental! In some ways it's a shame you felt called to make this video but on the other hand I'm so glad you did! It's nobody else's business how individuals use their sketchbooks, it's what brings joy and fulfilment that counts! We just all need to follow our own sunshine 🌻🌻🌻xx
“If you find yourself feeling jealous, sit with it and ask why” Well said Katie. Great piece of advice. Art is what we make it and how we make it doesn’t matter. All that matters is that we feel good in what makes us happy. 🥰
Honestly, there are always people to police creativity or technique online no matter what the medium, but as long as you are creating and enjoying the process, there is no right or wrong! It's inspiring to see different ways of working ❤
Omg, our notebooks are our playgounds, we should play the way we want to. There's so much creative freedom taken out from us already.
I find that I reach for my sketchbook when I don’t want the pressure of making something “perfect”, but ironically enough I end up making my favorite work because I feel the freedom to be loose and experiment. Great video!
It’s frustrating to see people being critical about what word they use when they used a sketchbook for their art. I’m an author, English scholar and artist. I understand that words matter, but I agree with you Katie. First many use sketchbooks, and that’s what they are called to purchase, but we can do whatever we want with them. I like the word sketchbook because of the same reason as yours. It’s experimental. It doesn’t have to be perfect. We all come from different levels with our art and we have to realize that when we view other sketchbooks. I’m thankful you shared this video, Katie.
I’m a hobby artist who started painting for my mental health support and fell deep in love. When I first started I was grateful for sketchbook artists because at the time I didn’t have a studio or lots of supplies so having an easy comprehensive spot where I could track my progress was so helpful to me. Now that my skills are growing, I do pieces on canvas and loose sheets for more “finished” pieces but I still appreciate doing all sorts of work in my sketchbook from pieces I’m really proud of to stuff I do when I sick just to keep my hands moving. I think it’s important that we each take responsibility for our responses. I find it disheartening that folks see someone produce really skilled work (or work at a skill they’re not at) and then use that as an opportunity to spill their self loathing on others because they feel envious. Art making is a skill accessible to all. I wish folks would use those moments of envy to fuel their practice rather than tearing someone down for being farther along.
A sketchbook is a place where you can create art anyway you want to. My sketchbook definitely isn’t perfect, in fact that’s the whole point. It’s a place to be free, to learn, and to experiment... for me. If I want a perfect painting then I use my posh paper, paints and brushes. Your sketchbook is lovely and you are brave to share your art with us all. You’re an inspiration Katie. The more subscribers and viewers you get the more opinions you will get. Keep ‘doing you’. 🙏💜🌟
I avoided using sketchbooks for a long time because I thought that everything in one needed to be with a common theme or place. I worried a lot. In the past few years I’ve tossed that restriction i placed on myself and work mostly in sketchbooks, I include anything and everything I want to paint or write about. We have so many restrictions on our time and lives. Why add restrictions to our art?
I have seen videos that encourage people not to put too much pressure on themselves to have to have a pretty sketchbook just because a lot of influencers post polished art in their sketchbooks. That is a sentiment that I completely agree with. So it's a little frustrating to see that some people take that positive message and turn it into something negative like "You're using your sketchbook wrong if you do finished art in it." The whole point was there isn't a right or wrong way to use a sketchbook. 😮💨 Your art is lovely. Please don't let it get to you. Many people who comment things like this are just looking for someone else to blame because they don't have a consistent art practice of their own and they feel guilty about it.
Five minutes in and I've already learned something -- that I want to use a nice big brush like yours. Oh darn, guess that means another trip to the art supply store.
Can’t believe anyone would say you do something wrong in your sketchbook!! Your paintings are beautiful! Talent and skill should shine bright!! Keep up the amazing art!! ❤
