The Mirandol Railway Bridge and SNCF Trains - French Model Railroad Layout in N Scale

At the great model railroad exhibition “Modelspoor Expo 2024” in Belgium, the members of the model railroading club “Club Maquettisme Sedanais” presented their modular model railroad layout, which is built in N scale and called “A walk through the province of Lozère” (“En passant par la Lozère”). Lozère is a department in the region of Occitanie in Southern France. It is named after Mont Lozère.

The N scale model train layout consists of two dioramas: The “Mirandol” section designed by Claude Joron and the “Prévenchères” section designed by Frédéric Rensch. The diorama of “Mirandol” depicts the Mirandol railroad viaduct. The single-track railway bridge crosses the river Chassezac and is part of the highest, non-electrified railroad line in the French SNCF rail network. The diorama of “Prévenchères” depicts the train station of Prévenchères-Gorges du Chassezac in the late 1980s. This train station is originally located on the railroad line between Clermont-Ferrand and Nîmes.

The small scale of 1/160 made it possible to reproduce the viaduct, the village and its buildings as well as the landscape in its dimensions true to the original. Both dioramas consist of two shelf layouts with integrated lighting. Two fiddle yards are flange-mounted in the background, resulting in a footprint of 7.5 x 3.5 meters. The track used on both sections is made by the manufacturer Peco (track code 55). The model trains are controlled automatically by an “ESU ECoS Control Center”.
