Video Description
~~~~~~
Could you ever imagine an application being worth 5 thousand dollars?
Google seems to think so, as they have just increased the limit app developers can set their prices to for both paid apps, in-app purchases and subscription services.
For 10 years, we've seen Google steadily increase the maximum price they allow 3rd-party developers to set in their apps.
This limit was set to $200 back then, got a bump up to $400 in 2015, more than doubled this limit last year at Google I/O 2024 when it was set to $1000.
And now they're increasing this limit by 5x
Play Store Max Price Increase
Over the last 24 hours, Google ha announced they will allow 3rd-party developers to price their paid application as high as $4,999.99.
This increase in price also applies to in-app purchases and subscription prices as well.
Imagine subscribing to an application and end up paying 5 thousand dollars each month to renew it.
Now, thankfully this feature hasn't been unlocked for every developer with apps in the Play Store.
And you actually have to fill out a form to request that your max price be set to that new limit.
But before you can do that, your Google Play Developer Account has to be active and your apps must be in good standing.
You also need to be in compliance with all of the policies that are laid out in the Google Play Developer Program
Along with the terms that are outlined in the Developer Distribution Agreement that you signed.
And lastly, your total earnings from Google Play has to exceed $1 million USD during the last 12-month period.
So thankfully we're seeing quite the number of restrictions being applied here.
But it's still a wild thing to do considering the economic environment that most of the world is in right now.
conclusion
I know you've heard those stories about a child gaining access to the phone of their parent.
And then racking up thousands of dollars in charges from in-app purchases within the kid's favorite game.
So you can imagine how much easier this will be when those limits are increased from $1,000 to $5,000.
Now don't get me wrong. I can completely understand a B2B company needing to charge that much for some software that's required to run your business. Or to gain access to certain tools that allows you to complete your job better or faster.
But are these companies really going to want to give up 30% of each sale?
It just makes me wonder which of the popular free-to-play microtransaction heavy games ends up adding this first.
