"Windforms" Mural by Ivan Depeña
“Windforms” is the tallest painted mural in the state of New Mexico. In 2024, the Artist Ivan Toth Depeña and his team created this piece to turn the west-facing facade of Bernalillo County's headquarters into a bold and vibrant work of art. The design honors Albuquerque’s distinctive environment, drawing inspiration from the geological and ecological beauty of the surrounding landscapes and skylines, including the Rio Grande, the Sandia Mountains, and the high desert. With its vivid colors and abstract, flowing shapes, the composition captures the essence of the horizon, blending the earth and sky. At night, subtle lighting effects animate the piece so that it takes on the movement of wind, water, and the other natural forces that affect our landscapes. The project was funded Bernalillo County’s Art in Public Place Program, which sets aside one and a half percent of the county’s general obligation bonds passed during the general election every two years for the commission and purchase of works of art.
