These sounds represent years of experimentation, trial, error, and a series of happy accidents in my own work. Myself and others have used them to compose film scores, write songs, edit videos, and even perform live. So I know how powerfully useful they can be. They are not complete ideas, but rather, the foundational layer that allows you to quickly find inspiration and direction in whatever your creative practice may be.

FOR FILMMAKERS, CREATORS, and EDITORS

PADS

Have an interview or piece of dialogue that doesn't need a busy score? Drop these underneath. Use the 30-second version for quick edits or the 5-minute version for longer form interviews.
Use these pads as an underscore for sound effects and dialogue-heavy edits. Sometimes an edit is more about the sound design and less about the music. If that's the case, these pads are minimal enough to stay out of the way but unique enough to keep the moments between hits and whooshes interesting.
Have an existing score or licensed track that just needs a stripped-back section? Use these to create an extended intro or bridge section. Simply find one and the same key as your score and drop it in your edit. You can also use programs like Adobe Audition or plugins like Waves Sound Shift to transpose any pad to fit the key of your licensed or custom track
HITS and SWELLS

Compose your own trailer promo. Pull in a PAD as your underscore. Use a single HIT to create dynamic sound that matches up with your edit. These hits can really make a single cut be instantly impactful and emotionally important.
Use the SWELL section to pull in sounds that will grow and build excitement towards a single moment. A single SWELL that leads to an isolated HIT might be all an edit needs to really set it apart.
FOR COMPOSERS, PRODUCERS, and SONGWRITERS

PADS

In a songwriting session? Sometimes just getting the ball rolling can be all a session needs to be successful, and dead air can be really uninspiring. Pull in one of these 5-minute long pads and start playing with new chord progressions and melodies while the pad plays in the background. It's not gonna help with the chorus lyric. Haha. But it will set the mood.
Composing a custom score? So much of scoring is about subtly keeping the audience engaged without distracting from the story. When I am writing a custom score, I usually start with the piano and one of these pad layers to quickly get the ideas flowing. Use one of these PADS and your baseline underscore, pull in a piano, and then layer and EQ additional pads to grow the music with the story.
Playing live? Drop one of these 5-minute PADS into your Ableton live session, and you instantly have an extra layer of depth and ambiance that can really enhance a live band performance. These pads combined with a few of the HITS and SWELLS could also make for great live show intro material.
HITS and SWELLS

Chorus not exciting enough? Your chorus might actually be great, but you need to introduce it the right way. I use these swells all the time as a way to build excitement coming out of the verse and leading into a big chorus.
Need to transition out of a section? Use one of the HITS to create a brief moment of impact and space before launching into your next melodic section.
Feeling creative? For you producers who want to try a new sample instrument trick, try mapping these hits to your keyboard and playing the sounds as a new one-of-a-kind keys instrument..
