A 5% tornado risk means you have a 1 in 20 chance of a tornado occurring within 25 miles of your location.
This is a credible tornado setup in the Texas South Plains region, especially near boundaries late this evening.
📝 Overview
A volatile storm setup is expected across far eastern New Mexico and the Texas South Plains this afternoon and evening, with a risk for giant hail, damaging winds, and a few tornadoes.
Initial supercells will pose the greatest risk for hail and tornadoes, with a possible evolution into a line or cluster later tonight.
⛈️ Hazards Include
🧊 Giant hail up to 4” in diameter
🌪️ A couple of tornadoes, especially near boundaries in west TX and eastern NM
💨 Damaging wind gusts, especially after storms merge into clusters
🕓 Timeline
🕓 Mid to Late Afternoon (4–6 PM CDT): Supercells initiate near the Caprock and eastern NM
🌆 Evening (6–9 PM CDT): Tornado and giant hail threat peaks near Lubbock, Clovis, and Plainview
🌒 Late Evening–Overnight (9 PM – 1 AM CDT): Storms may organize into a cluster with a transition to more of a wind/hail threat as they spread eastward
📌 Regional Notes
🟠 TX South Plains: Expect rapid storm development with giant hail and tornado potential near outflow and dryline interactions
🟡 Permian Basin: A couple of discrete supercells possible with a large hail and brief tornado threat
🟢 Lower MS Valley/SE US: Marginal severe risk with gusty winds from scattered thunderstorms, mainly in the afternoon
⚠️ Stay Weather-Aware
If you're in or near Lubbock, Clovis, or Plainview, be prepared for high-end severe weather this evening.
Charge your phone, stay tuned to local alerts, and have a shelter plan ready, especially between 6–9 PM CDT.
