Trying (& Failing) To Download Satellite Data From Toosheh (Knapsack For Hope)
The Toosheh or "Knapsack for Hope" network was another one-way data stream aimed at beating censorship in 3rd-world dictatorships. I heard that it used to be available in North America as well, but unfortunately I wasn't able to find it.
The idea was similar to Othernet / Outernet, but used existing satellite TV hardware to download MpEG-2 Transport Stream (.ts) files to a flash drive. Users would then decode these files into news, ebooks, and other media through special software.
The system seemed superior to Othernet in that it didn't need special equipment, just semi-standard Free To Air (FTA) satellite hardware.
Maybe it's still around, but if so there's no consistent info about how to use it, which makes it kind of useless for oppressed populations if they can't find the thing!
