There Is No Such Thing As A Data Science Learning Path That Will Get You A Data Science Job

488 views 23________

I know you want a learning path to land a job but in Data Science, the learning path is just the beginning. Companies are looking for you to have a process. You must learn how to take a business problem and end up with a reliable model, that works in production, and produces business value.

Bootcamps to degrees teach skills and workflows. The process is harder to teach because it requires you to synthesize skills to problems you've never seen before. It is best taught through experience and working with a mentor over a year or 2. Education isn't setup to do that. The project assignments are great at reinforcing the workflow but fail to develop your process.

You have to abandon the straight line concept of a learning path to be successful in landing your first role. Focus on the outcome and learn the process, agnostic of tools. The programming language, model architecture, math, etc. are only supporting pieces. You need them to execute your process. Without the process, you don't really understand how to generate the results.
