Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on the early modern history and history of the United States of America continues with a new series on the Civil War. Previously, we have covered the American Revolution - the War of American Independence ( • American Revolution - Causes, Problems, Be... . The set up episode of our Civil War series will discuss why the South seceded and the real reason behind the American Civil War ( • The Real Reason Behind the American Civil War ), while the first episode will describe how and why the American Civil War happened ( • How the American Civil War Happened - Road... ). The first shots were fired with the Bleeding Kansas in 1854–1861 and John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry in 1859, but the war started with the Confederate secession and the attack on Fort Sumter in April of 1861 and the first battle of Bull Run in July of 1861 ( • American Civil War Begins with Fort Sumter... ). In the aftermath, Lincoln and his commander McClellan launched the Peninsula Campaign, hoping to take the Confederate capital of Richmond during the Seven Days Battles and win the war quickly. These events allowed Lee to go on an offensive, leading to the second battle of Manassas (Bull Run), Cedar Mountain and Antietam ( • Lee Attacks - Manassas and Antietam - Amer... ).
