Ultimate Sweet Potato Growing Guide 🌱 | From Slips to Harvest!

Ultimate Sweet Potato Growing Guide 🌱 | From Slips to Harvest!
Hi everyone! In today’s video, we’re going to learn how to grow sweet potatoes not just for the leaves – but to get big, healthy tubers. It’s simple, rewarding, and perfect for home gardens!

First, choose the right variety. If you want to harvest large tubers, go for sweet potato varieties bred for root production – not just leafy greens.

Look for healthy slips or vine cuttings from mature sweet potato plants.

Sweet potatoes love loose, well-drained soil. Prepare your garden bed by tilling deeply – at least 30 centimeters – and mix in compost or organic matter to improve soil texture.

Avoid heavy clay soil, as it can prevent tubers from expanding.

Plant the vines or slips with nodes facing down into the soil. Space each plant about 30–40 cm apart, and keep rows at least 75 cm apart for enough room to grow.

Sweet potatoes love warm weather and full sun, so choose a sunny spot!

Water regularly, especially during the first few weeks after planting. But don’t overwater – sweet potatoes don’t like soggy soil.

As the vines grow, keep the area weed-free, and mound up soil gently around the base to help tuber formation.

The plants will spread fast, with vines covering the ground. After 90 to 120 days, the tubers begin to mature underground.

Avoid harvesting too early. Wait until the leaves start yellowing – a sign that the tubers are ready.

Gently dig around the base of the plant with a garden fork or your hands. Be careful not to damage the tubers.

Shake off excess dirt, and let them cure in a dry, shady place for 7–10 days to improve sweetness and storage life.

And here’s the reward – fresh, homegrown sweet potatoes! You can bake, boil, roast, or even make sweet potato fries.

There’s nothing better than enjoying vegetables you grew with your own hands!
