Kings and Generals' historical animated documentary series on the history of Rome continues with another episode in our coverage of the First Punic War, as we discuss the battle of Cape Ecnomus of 256 BC - the largest naval battle of antiquity. Eight years into the First Punic War, Rome had disrupted Carthage’s dominance over Sicily and Corsica. Seeking a decisive blow, the Romans launched an ambitious African invasion, assembling a massive fleet of 330 quinqueremes. Carthage responded with its own fleet, and at Cape Ecnomus, the two powers collided in the largest naval battle of antiquity. The Romans, led by Regulus and Manlius, used innovative formations and boarding tactics like the corvus to defeat the Carthaginian navy. Following their victory, the Romans sailed across the Mediterranean and landed in North Africa, raiding the countryside and capturing Aspis. With one consul returning to Rome with spoils, Regulus stayed behind to continue the campaign. His army marched inland, laying siege to Adys, where Carthaginian forces made a fatal tactical error by camping on a hill—squandering their cavalry and elephant advantage. After a swift Roman assault, the region fell. Regulus established a base at Tunes, just hours from Carthage, and demanded humiliating surrender terms. Carthage refused. With the city on the brink of collapse, salvation arrived not from within, but from Xanthippus of Sparta, a brilliant mercenary commander.
